Aim

In the context of serious or life-threating illness/frailty, this interactive study day provides you with the opportunity to:

  •  Explore the role of therapeutic communication in enabling a person-centred approach to identifying and meeting the concerns, needs and priorities of patients/families in a way that they feel is helpful to them
  • Gain Top Tips on therapeutic communication approaches/skills and person-centred strategies and structures that enable individualised gathering and giving of information to support patient/family and professional well-being and satisfaction

 

Target Audience

  • Any care professional who communicates with people facing or affected by serious or life limiting illness/frailty, and directly responsible for gathering and giving information, including as part of identifying problems, needs and concerns. This may include as part of assessments, admissions, planning, and discharge and consultation episodes
  • Examples include: Doctors, Nurses, Radiographers, Allied Health Professionals, Senior support workers (i.e. specifically involved in gathering patient information as part of assessment), Social Workers

  • Considering why focus on therapeutic communication matters
  • Identifying Top Tips on therapeutic communication approaches/skills to add to your ‘communication toolkit’ and which to leave out
  • Identifying strategies and structures that enable the gathering and giving of information in a person-centred way and that balances both the client-professional agendas
  • Opportunity to identify the communication challenges you face in enabling communication to be therapeutic in practice
  • Interactive opportunities to learn helpful communication skills/strategies from situations identified by the group
