This level 6 module is aimed at Health Care professionals who provide care for people with a cancer diagnosis within their care setting; who wish to develop their critical understanding of palliative and end of life care of the person with cancer. Learners will have the opportunity to critically align knowledge, skills and attitudes to personal practice, in a way that supports personal development that can positively influence person-centred approaches in meeting the needs of those who are living with progressive life-limiting illness.
This module is aimed at Health Care professionals who provide care for people with a cancer diagnosis within their care setting; who wish to develop their critical understanding of palliative and end of life care of the person with cancer. There are 2 options to undertake, at Level 6 or Level 7, and is suitable for those with appropriate background qualifications to study at Masters Level 6 or 7 accordingly. This course can be taken as a CPD standalone module or as part of the Cancer Care MSc Programme pathway.

In the context of cancer: •Broad Principles underpinning Palliative Care, •The Palliative Care Context – development and definitions •Attitudes and Approaches to Death and Dying in the 21st Century •Concepts for End of Life Care – Future Care Planning and Priorities considerations •The psychological and spiritual impact of living with progressive life-limiting illness and facing dying. •Involving & meeting needs of those who are important to the patient – the informal carer perspective. •Ethico-legal considerations and challenges that influence decision-making and communications in the palliative and end of life context. •Key Principles for Symptom Management in Advanced Disease •Impeccable Assessment - influences on management approaches in advanced disease (e.g symptoms of Pain, Nausea & Vomiting, Breathlessness) •Signs, Symptoms & approaches to common Palliative Oncological Emergencies in advanced disease •The Team work approach to timely meeting need (e.g. showcasing role & remit of other professional/service groups).
